BACKSBERG ESTATE CELLARS

Nestled on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain, equidistant to the cosy Winelands towns of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl, in the Western Cape of South Africa, Backsberg Estate Cellars boasts 80 hectares under vine on the Klein Babylonstoren property with additional satellite vineyards in two neighbouring areas.

Founded by a family of Jewish refugees from Lithuania in 1916 they produce tiered wines and brandies to a broad range of wine lovers and their philosophy remains that of providing wines which are elegant and approachable. Their range includes wines from Chenin Blanc to Pinotage to Merlot, as well as fortified wines, excellent brandies and delicious MCC Brut. They also produce a small range of 100% Kosher wines which celebrate their Jewish roots. Backsberg’s exceptional wines are a product of the detailed attention in the vineyard and the skill of – Backsberg’s head winemaker and master brandy distiller, Alicia Rechner, one of South Africa’s formidable female wine makers. 

Backsberg are leaders in sustainability and in 2006, Backsberg became South Africa’s first certified carbon neutral winery and the family continues to farm in this manner. The estate holds additional accreditations with the well-recognised Wine and Agricultural Ethical Trading Association (WIETA) and the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) initiative.
